Ángel L. Viloria(Maracaibo, 1968) is licenciate of Biology (Universidad del Zulia, 1991) and Doctor of Philosophy in zoology (University of London, 1998). At a very young age he developed curiosity and interest in nature. He was progressively inclined to learn about aquatic organisms, especially marine, and switched later on to insects. From his early youth he got involved in practising mountaineering and other exploration activities for years. Natural history in the mountains derived into especialization on taxonomy and biogeography of high elevation butterflies, a field to which he devoted his professional career. He has proved to have a wide variety of intelectual interests, from general zoology, systematic zoology, historical biogeography, comparative biology, history, to philosophy of biology. He was a Zoology lecturer and professor in the Experimental Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad del Zulia and director of its Biology Museum (MBLUZ). He became Associated Researcher of the Centro de Ecología at the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas (IVIC) in July 2000. He is still doing research and teaching graduate students, but most of the time he acts as the Deputy Director of IVIC.


Ángel L. Viloria nació en Maracaibo, Venezuela, en 1968. Es licenciado en Biología (Universidad del Zulia, 1991) y doctor en Zoología (Universidad de Londres, 1998). Desde muy joven expresó curiosidad por la naturaleza, primero hacia el conocimiento de organismos acuáticos y luego hacia los insectos. Involucrado desde su adolescencia en el ejercicio del montañismo, derivó hacia la especialización en el estudio taxonómico y biogeográfico de mariposas de grandes altitudes, al cual se dedica profesionalmente. Sus inquietudes intelectuales van desde zoología general, sistemática zoológica, biogeografía histórica, biología comparada e historia, hasta filosofía de la biología. Fue profesor de Zoología en la Universidad del Zulia y director de su Museo de Biología. Desde julio de 2000 se desempeña como Investigador Asociado del Centro de Ecología del Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas, y desde junio de 2005 es subdirector de este instituto.

Ameranthropoides loysi Montandon 1929: The History of a Primatological Fraud reviews the information published on the controversy of the discovery of an alleged Neotropical anthropoid ape, that resulted in one of the most notorious scientific frauds of the 20th Century. Such finding supposedly occurred either in 1917 or 1918 while oil prospecting in the forests of the Tarra River region, located in the southwestern part of Lake Maracaibo, Zulia state, Venezuela. This case was as much discussed as it was unresolved. Detailed analysis of the archival sources suggested that the naming of such a primate was a fraud orchestrated by the Swiss physician George Montandon and de Loys himself, resulting in one of the most notorious scientific frauds of the 20th Century. This investigation provides previously unpublished information about this case -whose development seems to be resolved in Venezuela, through the account of a third witness, the Venezuelan physician Enrique Tejera.


Ameranthropoides loysi Montandon 1929: la historia de un fraude primatológico revela la información publicada en torno de la controversia del descubrimiento de un supuesto simio neotropical, que resultó ser uno de los mayores fraudes científicos del siglo XX. Tal hallazgo presuntamente ocurrió en 1917 ó 1918 durante una exploración petrolera en la región del río Tarra, al sur del Lago de Maracaibo, estado Zulia, Venezuela. Es un caso tan discutido como irresoluto. El análisis detallado de las fuentes documentales permite sugerir que la descripción de dicho primate fue una farsa orquestada por el médico suizo George Montandon y por el mismo de Loys. La investigación aporta información inédita sobre este particular -posiblemente uno de los fraudes científicos más escandalosos del siglo XX- y cuyo desarrollo parece quedar aclarado en Venezuela por el testimonio de un tercer testigo, el médico venezolano Enrique Tejera.
